The first thing to discuss on a glass railing is glass thickness. Depending on height and span we use 8, 10 or 12 mm toughened glass. Thinner glass is cheaper, but a balcony railing is a safety component, not decoration. You do not economise here.
On a frameless glass railing the glass either sits in a floor-recessed U-channel or on point fixings called spigots. The U-channel looks cleaner. Spigots come apart more easily, so replacing a single pane costs less. On sea-view terraces people usually ask for the U-channel, because nothing is left in front of the view.
Is a handrail necessary? For everyday use we recommend one. Where hands touch the glass constantly, marks stay. A stainless or aluminium handrail gives you something to hold and protects the top edge of the glass.
In Bodrum we keep one rule on materials: if it is stainless steel, make it grade 316. Grade 304 is fine indoors but starts pitting within a few years by the sea. You see the price difference on day one and the result in year five.
